A thriving economy starts with a welcoming community. When people from different backgrounds, cultures, races, and orientations feel valued and accepted, they bring new ideas, businesses, and opportunities that strengthen our local economy.
Cultural competence is more than just embracing diversity—it’s a powerful driver of economic development, tourism, and business growth. Communities that foster inclusivity become attractive destinations for visitors, entrepreneurs, and investors alike. Restaurants, shops, and service providers flourish as diverse perspectives shape innovative products and services tailored to a broad audience.
Tourism benefits greatly from a welcoming atmosphere. Travelers actively seek destinations where they feel safe and appreciated. Cities and towns that celebrate cultural diversity through festivals, events, and attractions draw larger crowds, increasing hotel stays, restaurant sales, and retail spending.
Additionally, an inclusive business environment encourages entrepreneurship and workforce expansion. When people of all backgrounds see opportunity within a community, they are more likely to launch new businesses, create jobs, and invest in the area. Companies also prefer locating in areas known for cultural competence, as it helps attract top talent and fosters a collaborative, innovative work environment.
I am grateful to have met many new people who have chosen to make Freeport and Stephenson County their home over the last year through our Stephenson County Area Advocate program. The feedback from these new faces is positive, refreshing, and reinforces the importance of welcoming all who are looking for a new place to call home. They tell stories of how wonderful and welcoming people are in our communities and how overjoyed they are in their decision to move here.
The pathway to long-term economic success lies in making everyone feel at home. By continuing to embrace inclusivity, we position our community as a vibrant and prosperous place where businesses thrive, tourism flourishes, and new opportunities emerge for all.
Thank you for continuing to be a community who is going the extra mile to support our neighbors and businesses. It is this tremendous welcome that proves our community is a place where everyone can belong.
