Freeport Sets New World Record for Largest Human Pretzel Image
603 Participants Unite on National Pretzel Day to Celebrate Pretzel City USA

Known proudly as Pretzel City USA, Freeport, IL has once again lived up to its name by officially setting a new world record for the Largest Human Pretzel Image! On Saturday, April 26, 2025 — National Pretzel Day — a total of 603 community members gathered at the FAM Arts Plaza in downtown Freeport to form the shape of a giant pretzel, securing a place in history for their hometown.

Organized by the Greater Freeport Partnership with support from the City of Freeport, Freeport Art Museum, and many other private businesses, the event was not just about setting a record — it was a celebration of Freeport’s unique identity, pride, and community spirit. As the birthplace of the Pretzel City mascot and nickname, Freeport has long embraced the pretzel as a symbol of its German heritage and quirky image.

“This achievement is more than just a number,” said Partnership Brand Director Nicole Haas. “It’s a testament to the heart and spirit of Freeport, where traditions are honored, neighbors come together, and pride runs deep. Witnessing this fantastic occasion was as inspiring as it was exciting.”

Setting this world record comes at a time when the city is revitalizing its downtown, boosting tourism, and strengthening its sense of community pride. By embracing its historic nickname and creating a visible, joyful moment of unity, Freeport has sent a clear message: Pretzel City USA is thriving, proud, and ready for the future.

While it was cost prohibitive for Guiness World Records to be present for the occasion, Freeport’s new record will be submitted to Guiness World Records for official certification.

The current record listed in Guiness World Records was of 424 people set in 2019, and then an additional “unofficial” record was set in 2024 in France of 529 people. Freeport’s attendance of 603 significantly set the bar for future attempts.

This is the first of many upcoming community events for downtown Freeport. For more information, visit greaterfreeport.com and click on “Events” or sign up for the weekly events guide by clicking “Weekly Events” to subscribe.
