Day Trip Ideas

Sometimes the possibilities are overwhelming! To help you put the great attractions and spaces in Freeport and Stephenson County into a travel-friendly perspective, here are a few trip ideas to get your imagination rolling. Pair the itineraries together and make a multi-day stay!

Home Run Heroes

Start the day with a trip to the Children’s Hands-On Museum and then grab the best hot dogs in town to take for a picnic lunch at Little Cubs Field. Bring your bats and baseballs, wiffleballs, kickballs and other equipment to enjoy the mini Friendly Confines. Across the street, Manny’s serves amazing pizza and tacos to curb your appetite before venturing just a few blocks west to the breathtaking beauty of Krape Park filled with activities such as mini golf, paddle boating, carousel rides and more.

Live Like Ladies

A ladies day out never sounded so good! Meet at the easily-accessible, always cozy coffee shop, Higher Grounds, and make plans for a day full of shopping, dining and conversation. Plenty of shopping opportunities lead you to Downtown Freeport where dozens of boutiques and shops are ready for your arrival. Once the bags have been safely set aside, find your way for cocktails and dinner on the patio of The Wagner House. There may be time for a movie at the Lindo Theatre next store as the group relaxes and rests after a wonderful day of togetherness.

Boy’s Day

A day away with great friends is calling to you and we have great options to get outdoors and explore. Try your swing at championship courses like Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport or Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Lena. When you are ready to rest and relax, find your way to nearby Generations Brewing Co. or Lena Brewing Company to enjoy local craft beer selections while you add up your scores. When the time is right, take your big appetites to Big O’s on the Hollow or Rafters Restaurant to fill the day. If you are looking to make a weekend of it, try Lena one day and Freeport the next!

Trail Time

Unload your gear at Tutty’s Crossing Trailhead in Downtown Freeport and trek the flat, 17-mile Jane Addams Trail before spending the afternoon refueling. With your appetite in high gear after your ride, you are ready for a gourmet grilled cheese (and more) at Pub 219 located just one block from the trailhead. Your sweet tooth is calling and Union Dairy is ready to answer! The 100-year tradition offers the finest flavors and sundaes from a 50’s-style diner. While you delight in your treats, take a walk next door to the historic Lincoln-Douglas Debate Site. End the day with the same competitive spirit as you began. Try out the 11th Frame Arcade inside 4 Seasons Bowling Center and challenge your family to the lanes, the games, or both!
